Evening City is the primary Feywild settlement in the parallel of Kalashport, existing on the planar parallel of the Canal District. It is one of the three primary settings of Chapter 2 of the Faction Campaign, along with the Canal District and Deep Trench. It exists as a three-layered settlement built between four towering trees in the Feywild jungle.
Geography
Most of the Feywild is dangerous jungle. Evening City keeps its citizens safe by elevating the city hundreds of feet off the forest floor with what is practically an enormous treehouse. Evening City is divided into three layers based on social class. On the forest floor is the Guardian Tree. It remains almost entirely neglected by the city and most don't even know it exists. Directly above, the Understory layer is a shaded, moody platform lying beneath the leaves of the jungle trees. It is home to the working class and the city's industry. The Canopy layer sits among the top of the leaves and is exposed Evening City's signature sunset views. It is home to the artisan class of shop owners and mages. The Emergence Layer is the smallest platform rising above all the others, surrounded in perpetual sunset. It is the home of the Evening City Druids. Anyone else can only go up by invitation from the Archdruid.
History
The Feywild in the Kalashport parallel was uninhabited until 250 years ago, when the Elemental Guardian of Guardian Spring created the Maple Tree Network as a way for people to escape the war into the parallel realm. The Fey went through the portals first, but closed them shut from the other side by enchanting the Guardian Tree.
Alone in the Feywild Jungle, the Fey built Evening City between four magically grown supersized jungle trees. The Druids established a class system and life in Evening City was peaceful and uneventful for over 200 years.
Some time after the city was built, Cypress, one of the Evening City Druids who originally migrated through the network, constructed the Evening City Mills to draw life energy from the Guardian Tree to create immortality potions. Over time, this lead to deterioration and corruption of the network. The Maple Tree Network enlisted Yancy and Yin to restore itself. Yin, Rycan and Tae met Archdruid Humphrey and managed to convince him to give up immortality and right the wrongs of the Druids. The group defeated Cypress and destroyed the mills, ending Evening City's abuse of the Maple Tree Network and opening up the portals for the first time in 250 years.
With the network restored, anyone in Kalashport or Evening City could freely travel back and forth between realms. The Church of the Dragon formed an embassy to the city, and the two places began trade talks. With the mills destroyed, Evening City had a large workforce with no industry to work in. The city transitioned toward an export agriculture economy, utilizing the magical jungle trees' abundant fruits and the portals to easily send food to Kalashport.
Trivia
- The fruits grown in the upper layers of the trees are of a higher magical purity and never spoil. As a consequence of this, only fruits grown in the Understory can be fermented into wine. Those in the upper layers remain unaware of the concept of a bar.
- The Feywild has no day and night cycle. Evening City keeps time with a number system that has the same units of measurement the society used 250 years ago in the material realm. Most have forgotten what the numbers even refer to.
- If someone in Evening City asks you to do something "this evening", that means to do it at your earliest convenience.
