Overview
Rycan is Qaid’s second character for the Faction Campaign. He was an adjunct professor of Chronology at the Wizard Academy of Kalashport, who after suffering an accident during an experiment, was now on quest to restore his soul across planes.
Personality and Relationships
Rycan
In any situation, the only thing Rycan cared for is his research. He shrugged off antics and emotion, and acted purely in whatever interest best furthered his study. He would readily interact with other people if he thought it could help him, though he never considered developing social skills a worthwhile effort.
The only meaningful relationships Rycan had were with Yancy and Yin an his colleage Emeraldina the Superb. Albeit for different reasons, Rycan and Yancy worked together to restore the Guardian Tree and find the elemental dragon scales. Rycan for a long time did not trust Yancy and Yin, and only intended to be friends as long as it takes to get what he wants. After accepting his fate and becoming the Eternal Guardian, Rycan, or whatever is left of him, helps Yancy and Yin protect the Maple Tree Network.

Pre-Campaign
Prior to FerrCO's collapse, Rycan suffered an accident during a chronurgy experiment. He tried to cast a chronal spell, unknowingly in the presence of a piece of maple tree root set aside for a separate experiment. The root reacted with the spell and created a chrono-planar rift between the Material Realm and the Feywild. Rycan managed to close the rift, but the Maple Tree Network (which was corrupted due to the actions of the Fey) fragmented his soul and bound his chronal magic with corrupted planar magic. Since then, every time he uses chronal magic, a part of his soul is torn to the Dream realm, leaving only an outline that can only be seen with truesight.
Campaign
Rycan joined the party in Chapter 2 to help them find a way into the Feywild. Though only caring for his research on the surface, Rycan eventually admitted to the party the true nature of his illness. As it progressed further, Rycan became more and more unstable and desperate. Before finding the last dragon scale, the Maple Tree Network came to Rycan in a dream and told him he was destined to die in the dream realm and become its protector. With the news Rycan cared less about his survival and more about helping the party find The Cloud to stop their plot.
When the party entered the Dream Realm to defeat the corrupted Elemental Guardian, Rycan used the last of his remaining magic to defeat the god. Rycan then recollected all his fragmented silhouettes and died, turning into an orb of light that grew into a spirit dragon which disappeared after a moving speech. Yin explained to the party that Rycan made a deal with them and the Network to become a Dream Realm protector spirit rather than letting the chronal illness consume him.
Appearance
Rycan has tan skin, large droopy ears, and straight, chin-length purple hair. He wears a blue lab coat and a large wizard hat inlaid with an arcane clock. He appears gaunt and malnourished, partly because of his atrocious diet, and partly because of his chronal illness from the accident. The Eternal Guardian appears as a large golden dragon with a purple mane.
Trivia
- Rycan doesn’t consider eating and preparing food a worthy use of his time. Each day, he pulls a leaf off a nearby tree to provide his daily nourishment. It is unknown how he hasn’t succumbed to starvation.
- Rycan has a cousin who also lived in Kalashport. He was beamed to the Feywild in a botched experiment, and through the network corruption, was transformed into a giant ape. The the ape exists to this day and maintains a territory in the Feywild parallel of Downtown Kalashport. It is the only creature outside the party to have defeated a POG officer.
